Many stockpiling weapons ahead of polls a serious concern: Asif Mahmud
He urges the Election Commission and law enforcement agencies to exercise stricter scrutiny and enforce security measures more rigorously
National Citizen Party (NCP) Election Steering Committee Chairman and spokesperson Asif Mahmud said that weapons are being stockpiled in many areas ahead of the upcoming elections, describing it "a matter of concern."
Speaking at a press conference at the NCP office in Bangla Motor this evening (7 February), Asif Mahmud said that while cordial relations with rival candidates exist in several constituencies, the presence of weapons could escalate tensions on election day.
He urged the Election Commission and law enforcement agencies to exercise stricter scrutiny and enforce security measures more rigorously.
"The environment is still better than in many previous elections. But if weapons are stockpiled, it could turn dangerous, and in some areas, elections may even be at risk of being halted. Joint forces must act seriously to ensure safety."
The press briefing was attended by NCP's Election Steering Committee Secretary Monira Sharmin and other central leaders of the party.
Addressing BNP, Asif said, "Some of the leaders have forgotten the hardships their families endured and are now taking an anti-people stance, attempting to revive the Awami League."
He went on to say, "At this moment, I do not see much difference between the BNP and the Awami League. We believe the people of Bangladesh will ultimately reject them."
