Jamaat chief warns of ‘conspiracies,’ urges voters to guard ballots until final results
He also alleged that there were renewed attempts in some areas to unlawfully take control of polling centres
As the voting for the 13th national election and the referendum ends, Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman urged vigilance against irregularities.
"Since yesterday, people courageously dispelled rumours and resisted attempts and conspiracies to occupy polling stations. From early morning, people cast their votes in a festive spirit, inspired by the aspiration to uphold justice," Shafique said in a Facebook post around 4pm.
He said, "We are deeply concerned to observe that in various parts of the country, attempts are being made to cast fake votes. In several locations, polling agents have been assaulted and injured. Women have been subjected to harassment."
The Jamaat ameer also alleged that there were renewed attempts in some areas to unlawfully take control of polling centres.
Therefore, he urged citizens to remain vigilant, protect their votes until the final results were declared and cooperate fully with law enforcement while guarding their polling stations.
He further said certain quarters were still conspiring to occupy polling centres and snatch ballot papers, urging the authorities to act firmly to curb such activities, protect the people's mandate and stand by the citizens.
"We also respectfully urge the administration and the members of law enforcement agencies to maintain a free and fair electoral environment. Nevertheless, the people believe that more swift and decisive measures are now required," he added.
