Trade deal with US can be revised if terms hurt Bangladesh's interests: Commerce minister
Responding to a question on inflation, the minister said the increase in fuel oil prices will create only a “one-time spike” and will not make inflation “spiral or become sticky”.
Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir has said there is scope to revise provisions in the trade agreement signed with the United States if any clause is later found to be unfavourable to Bangladesh's national interests.
Speaking to journalists today (8 May) after visiting the district council natural park project in Sylhet's Baish Tila area, he said agreements between two states cannot be changed arbitrarily like agreements between individuals.
Responding to a question on inflation, the minister said the increase in fuel oil prices will create only a "one-time spike" and will not make inflation "spiral or become sticky".
He also said inefficiencies in port management are increasing transportation costs and that a Danish official has been assigned to improve port efficiency.
The minister added that the government wants to hand over loss-making state-owned factories to private investors to create employment and increase revenue collection.
Regarding the proposed natural park in Sylhet, the minister said the district council owns 43 acres of land in the area and plans are underway to transform it into a tourist attraction.
"There will be cable cars, rope bridges and many other facilities in the natural park. There will be attractions for both children and adults," he said.
He added that the district council has prepared a master plan for the project and that the government will finance it.
