Jamaat candidate accuses Saki’s supporters of threatening agents in Brahmanbaria-6
However, denying the allegations Zonayed Saki made counter allegations saying, Jamaat activists are planning to create unrest at the voting centres and they are gather bamboo sticks for that purpose.
Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Md Mohsin has alleged that supporters of BNP-backed candidate Zonayed Saki are intimidating Jamaat's polling agents in the Brahmanbaria-6 (Bancharampur) constituency.
Mohsin made the allegations at an emergency press conference held at the party office in Bancharampur last night (10 February).
A total of 10 candidates are contesting the polls from Brahmanbaria-6. Voters expect a close contest between Saki and Jamaat's Mohsin.
At the press conference, Mohsin alleged that Jamaat's agents are being threatened at their homes and being warned not to serve as polling agents or work in favour of the party's electoral symbol, "the scale."
"They are being told that if they go to polling centres as agents, they will be forced to leave their homes," he claimed, adding that several agents have said they will not go to polling stations without adequate security.
Mohsin also alleged that female voters are being intimidated in different areas.
He claimed that threats were made to publicly humiliate women by forcibly removing their burqas and parading them on the streets - actions he described as violations of fundamental human rights.
"We demand that voters be allowed to go to polling centres freely," he said, calling the alleged threats "highly objectionable."
Referring to Saki's work on human rights and women's rights, Mohsin questioned the consistency of those principles with the alleged incidents.
The Jamaat candidate further claimed that there is no level playing field in the election, saying complaints submitted to the administration have not yielded any visible results.
"If we had seen visible action, we could assume there is a level playing field. Since we have not, concerns remain," he said.
However, denying the allegations Zonayed Saki made counter allegations during a press conference yesterday (10 February). He said, Jamaat activists are planning to create unrest at the voting centres and they are gather bamboo sticks for that purpose.
