Final preparations underway ahead of 13th national election
Following Election Commission directives, authorities are taking step-by-step measures to ensure transparent and secure voting
With the 13th National Parliamentary Election scheduled for Thursday (12 February), polling centres across the capital are buzzing with activity. From installing CCTV cameras to setting up help desks, organising voter lists to observing candidates' supporters, every centre is in its final stage of preparation.
Following Election Commission directives, authorities are taking step-by-step measures to ensure transparent and secure voting. Many centres have installed CCTV cameras to monitor proceedings, while help desks have been set up to guide voters on their polling station, serial numbers, and other necessary information. Voters, particularly first-timers, women, and the elderly, have welcomed these initiatives, noting their importance in facilitating a smooth voting experience. Volunteers have also been assigned to assist voters at these desks.
In Dhaka's constituencies – Dhaka-7, Dhaka-8, and Dhaka-10 – teams were seen organising booths at multiple centers including Dhaka College, TTC College, Government Laboratory School, and Meherunnisa Girls' School. Preparations range from arranging voter lists to marking help desk locations, ensuring that voters can navigate the centres efficiently.
Security arrangements have been strengthened. Law enforcement agencies are implementing centre-specific security plans, increasing patrols, and enhancing surveillance to maintain peace on election day. Newmarket Zone Additional Deputy Commissioner Shawkat told reporters, "We are inspecting all centres beforehand to prevent any disorder. Risk-prone polling stations are being monitored closely, and any issues are addressed before voting begins."
Meanwhile, discussion of the elections is widespread. Conversations about candidates, polling centres, and voting procedures are happening in markets, tea stalls, and neighbourhood gatherings, reflecting growing anticipation as election day approaches.
Election workers are also busy finalising preparations. Sohag, a member of the Newmarket Jubo Dal assigned to Dhaka College and TTC College centres, told The Business Standard, "Even though voter slips have already been delivered, help desks will be available for those who missed them or have changed their residence. Booths, voter lists, and help desks are being organised in advance so that voters can cast their ballots easily and efficiently."
As polling day nears, the combination of logistical, administrative, and security measures at these centres highlights the emphasis on a smooth, peaceful, and transparent election process.
