Election campaigns begin tomorrow for Sherpur-3, Bogura-6 seats
A total of six candidates, three in each constituency, are contesting the elections
Election campaigns for the parliamentary election in Sherpur-3 and the by-election in Bogura-6 will begin tomorrow (16 March), as the Election Commission (EC) has allotted election symbols to the candidates.
A total of six candidates, three in each constituency, are contesting the elections for the Sherpur-3 and Bogura-6 parliamentary seats, returning officers of the two constituencies said.
Returning officer of the Sherpur-3 constituency, Mohammad Jahangir Hossain, said that Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) candidate Md Mahmudul Haque Rubel will contest the election with the "Sheaf of Paddy" symbol, while Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Md Masudur Rahman will contest with the "Daripalla" symbol.
He added that a candidate of the Socialist Party of Bangladesh (Marxist) will contest the election with the "Scissors" symbol.
The EC had postponed the election in the constituency, originally scheduled for 12 February, following the death of the Jamaat-e-Islami candidate. A fresh schedule was later announced.
Returning officer of the Bogura-6 constituency, Md Fazlul Karim, said three candidates are contesting the by-election and were allotted their election symbols today (15 March).
He stated that BNP candidate Md Rezaul Karim Badsha will contest with the "Sheaf of Paddy" symbol, while Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Md Abidur Rahman will contest with the "Daripalla" symbol.
In addition, a candidate of the Bangladesh Development Party will contest with the "Cauliflower" symbol.
He added that the election atmosphere in the constituency is very positive.
The Bogura-6 seat fell vacant after Prime Minister Tarique Rahman relinquished it prior to taking oath, in accordance with the law, following his win in two parliamentary seats in the 12 February national election.
As there is no provision to hold membership of two parliamentary seats simultaneously, he retained the Dhaka-17 seat and vacated Bogura-6.
The EC later declared the seat vacant and announced a fresh election schedule.
According to the schedule announced by the Election Commission, voting in the Bogura-6 by-election and the general election in Sherpur-3 will be held on 9 April, from 7:30am to 4:30pm, without any break.
