Bogura-6 by-poll, Sherpur-3 rescheduled election on 9 April: EC
Nomination paper submission deadline on 2 March
The by-election to Bogura-6 and the rescheduled election to Sherpur-3 will be held on 9 April, the Election Commission (EC) announced today (24 February).
EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed unveiled the schedule at a press briefing at the Nirbachan Bhaban in Agargaon in the capital.
According to the schedule, the deadline for submission of nomination papers is 2 March, scrutiny will be held on 5 March, and the last date for withdrawal of candidature is 14 March.
Election Commissioner Abdur Rahmanel Masud said on Sunday that the commission aims to complete the by-elections to the two parliamentary seats by 14 April.
He said the EC is trying to hold the polls before "Pahela Boishakh", noting that storms and the rainy season are common after mid-April.
"We hope we will be able to do it before that," he said.
Replying to a query about postal ballots, Masud said postal voting will remain in place for the by-election.
BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman contested the February 12 general election from two constituencies – Bogura-6 and Dhaka-17 – and won both seats.
He later gave up the Bogura-6 seat for a by-election and took oath as a member of parliament from Dhaka-17.
