BNP proposes creation of vice president post in manifesto
To prevent the centralisation of power, the party has also proposed limiting the tenure of the prime minister to no more than two consecutive terms.
The BNP, in its election manifesto announced today (6 February), has proposed the creation of a vice president post.
The proposal was included under constitutional reforms in the state system reform section of the manifesto.
As part of state system reform, BNP has adopted a comprehensive plan for constitutional reform, primarily aimed at maintaining a balance of power and ensuring accountability of state institutions.
Under this plan, the principle of "absolute trust and faith in Almighty Allah" will be reinstated in the Constitution, and what the party described as undemocratic amendments will be repealed to establish a people-friendly governance system.
To prevent the centralisation of power, BNP has proposed limiting the tenure of the prime minister to no more than two consecutive terms and creating the post of vice president.
The party has also outlined plans to introduce an upper house in Parliament to ensure expert opinions and inclusive representation in lawmaking, amend Article 70, and appoint a deputy speaker from among opposition members.
To ensure genuine judicial independence, the manifesto emphasises appointing the chief justice based on seniority and strengthening the Supreme Judicial Council.
The reform agenda also includes pledges to form an independent Election Commission, establish a Police Commission, appoint an ombudsman, and reinstate the caretaker government system to ensure transparency and good governance.
