Any attempt to derail polls will face mass resistance: BNP
BNP urged the EC to take firm measures to ensure a peaceful and orderly polling environment.
BNP Standing Committee member and Election Management Committee Chairman Nazrul Islam Khan warned that any attempt to obstruct tomorrow's (12 February) election or create disorder would face mass resistance from the people, stressing that a firm stance by the Election Commission (EC) is essential to ensure a peaceful polling environment.
"Whoever tries to resist the election or create chaos, we will not need to do anything, the people themselves will resist them. Even if we attempt to do such things, the people will resist us as well," he said while briefing reporters after a meeting with CEC AMM Nasir Uddin at the EC Secretariat in Agargaon today (11 February) evening.
Nazrul said those who oppose political change or foresee certain defeat may attempt to foil the election, urging the EC to take firm preventive measures.
During the meeting, BNP submitted complaints along with news reports and videos alleging violations of the electoral code in several areas, including Feni-1, where a video showing the distribution of money has surfaced.
He also referred to incidents in Mymensingh, Ramu in Cox's Bazar, Kahaloo in Bogra, Lakshmipur and Saidpur, where Jamaat-e-Islami leaders were reportedly detained over alleged illegal activities, with related videos circulating on social media.
The BNP leader expressed dissatisfaction over remarks attributed to the EC's senior secretary regarding the carrying of large sums of money during the election period, saying such comments, if made, were inappropriate given existing restrictions aimed at preventing vote-buying.
Nazrul also questioned a statement issued by the executive director of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport regarding a detained Jamaat leader allegedly carrying cash with customs approval, calling the matter "mysterious" and urging authorities to clarify the issue.
He reiterated that the EC must take strong action to prevent any attempt to derail the election.
