BNP, Jamaat have 'nowhere to flee' if they fail on governance: Jamaat MP
Calling on the government to accept opposition criticism positively, MP Md Izzat Ullah today said scrutiny and debate over the budget were essential parts of democracy
Satkhira-1 MP Md Izzat Ullah today (24 June) warned that BNP and Jamaat could face the same fate as the Awami League if they fail to ensure good governance and meet public expectations.
Participating in the general discussion on the proposed FY27 budget in parliament, the Jamaat MP said the people of Bangladesh had ousted the Awami League through a mass uprising and would not tolerate extortion, corruption or tender manipulation by any party.
"The Awami League may have a place to go, but BNP and Jamaat do not," he said.
Calling on the government to accept opposition criticism positively, he said scrutiny and debate over the budget were essential parts of democracy.
On the budget, Izzat Ullah questioned the feasibility of achieving the Tk695,000 crore revenue target under the proposed Tk938,000 crore budget, saying the actual deficit could reach nearly Tk300,000 crore against the projected Tk243,000 crore.
He also expressed concern about rising debt and dependence on loans, noting that Bangladesh's total domestic and external debt had increased from Tk276,830 crore in 2009 to nearly Tk30 lakh crore in 2026.
The MP said non-performing loans stood at Tk588,704 crore at the end of March and warned that if banks failed to meet government borrowing needs, resorting to money printing could fuel inflation and put further pressure on the economy.
He cautioned against excessive reliance on borrowing for development spending, saying the country's debt burden could double if the current trend continues.
