Journalist assaulted by 'Jamaat activists' after protest march at Dhanmondi 32
Other journalists who tried to intervene also reportedly faced harassment.
A journalist was allegedly assaulted following a protest march at Dhanmondi 32 in the capital this morning (23 June), with allegations raised against Jamaat-e-Islami activists.
The victim, Mahfuzur Rahman Shishir, is reported to be a multimedia reporter of the daily Sokal.
Eyewitnesses said Jamaat-e-Islami Dhaka South City's Dhanmondi zone held an anti-Awami League protest march on the occasion of the 77th founding anniversary of the now-banned Awami League.
Leaders and activists from various levels of the party took part in the march, and after the rally, while journalists were speaking to participants at Dhanmondi 32, the activists asked them to leave.
When the journalists objected, they allegedly labelled the reporters as Awami League associates and assaulted Shishir.
Other journalists who tried to intervene also reportedly faced harassment.
Speaking to the media, Shishir said that after the rally, they were asked to leave while taking statements.
"When I protested saying we are not their workers, why should we leave, they called me an Awami League associate and assaulted me," he said.
Dhanmondi Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Saiful Islam told The Business Standard that police heard about the incident but are not sure whether the victim is a journalist.
He added that no complaint has been filed over the matter.
The Jamaat-e-Islami could not be reached for comment.
