5,067 inmates cast votes by postal ballot
Among them were 198 female prisoners and 56 VIP prisoners
A total of 5,067 inmates cast their votes through postal ballots from different prisons across the country over a period of seven days.
Among them were 198 female prisoners and 56 VIP prisoners.
Confirming the matter today (9 February), Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of Prisons (Development) Jannat-ul-Farhad said prisoners have been given the opportunity to exercise their voting rights through postal ballots.
The AIG said 1,521 prisoners voted on Tuesday (3 February), 988 on Wednesday (4 February), 1,138 on Thursday (5 February), 420 on Friday (6 February), 471 on Saturday (7 February), 295 on Sunday (8 February), and 234 today (9 February).
Explaining the voting process, the AIG said each registered prisoner is given three envelopes in a packet.
These include a ballot paper for the parliamentary election and separate ballot papers with 'Yes' and 'No' options for the referendum.
After casting their votes, prisoners seal the envelopes and submit them to prison authorities, who later forward them to the returning officer.
Sources at the Department of Prisons said that although there are a total of 84,400 prisoners in 75 prisons across the country, only 6,240 registered to vote through the designated app. After verification, the registrations of 5,920 prisoners were finalised.
