US-Israeli military campaign in Iran continues amid high civilian toll
As of early March 2026, the death toll has surpassed 1,000 people
The ongoing United States and Israeli military campaign against Iran has escalated into a broader regional conflict, with US officials describing a "mercy-less" effort aimed at dismantling the government in Tehran.
As of early March 2026, the death toll has surpassed 1,000 people. Despite extensive strikes, the Iranian ruling structure remains intact, and no visible internal challenges to the Islamic Republic system have emerged, says Al Jazeera.
US Military Strategy
Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth said the US military is operating with "little restraint" and has loosened its rules of engagement. The strategy focuses on maintaining total aerial dominance, with US and Israeli air forces targeting locations "every minute of every day." Hegseth described the offensive as a one-sided fight, stating, "We are punching them while they're down, which is exactly how it should be."
Key military actions claimed by the US and Israel include the killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and other senior officials, destruction of Iranian warships and military installations, and the continued targeting of sites deemed strategic by the "Department of War." President Donald Trump described the campaign's progress as a "15" on a scale of one to 10.
Civilian Casualties
The conflict has resulted in significant civilian casualties, prompting accusations of war crimes and crimes against humanity from the Iranian Foreign Ministry. Iranian officials have reported attacks on schools, hospitals, residential buildings, street markets, and medical centers.
One of the deadliest incidents occurred on February 28, when a strike on a girls' elementary school in Minab reportedly killed 165 people, mostly children. While White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said the US does not target civilians and is "investigating" the Minab incident, she reaffirmed that the military will continue "raining missiles and weapons down on Iran" to strike strategic targets.
The conflict has expanded beyond Iran's borders, causing mass displacement across the Middle East. Southern Lebanon has experienced significant displacement following Israeli military activity.
Iran has been accused of retaliating with missile and drone attacks on civilian targets in the Gulf, including hotels, airports, and energy installations.
Despite reports of widespread "misery, destruction and mass displacement," US leadership has continued to describe the campaign as successful.
