Bahrain says water desalination plant damaged in Iranian drone attack
Bahrain’s Ministry of Interior said the drone attack struck a desalination facility that processes seawater to supply freshwater to residents.
Bahrain has said an Iranian drone strike damaged a water desalination plant and injured three people, as Tehran continues its air campaign against Gulf countries.
In a statement posted on X this morning (8 March), Bahrain's Ministry of Interior said the drone attack struck a desalination facility that processes seawater to supply freshwater to residents.
"The Iranian aggression randomly targets civilian facilities and caused material damage to a water desalination plant following a drone attack," the ministry said.
Iran, however, said the United States had set a precedent for such strikes by previously targeting similar infrastructure on Iranian territory.
"The US committed a blatant and desperate crime by attacking a freshwater desalination plant on Qeshm Island," Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi wrote on X yesterday.
Gulf states host roughly 400 desalination plants, most of which run on oil and gas, producing about 40% of the world's desalinated water. Bahrain is believed to rely on such facilities for the majority of its drinking water.
