Xi proposes BRICS AI open-source zone to deepen Global South cooperation
China would take the lead in establishing the BRICS AI Open Source Zone to promote cooperation on large language models, AI training and the development of an open AI ecosystem, Xi says.
Chinese President Xi Jinping today (13 September) proposed a BRICS AI Open Source Zone and a special economic zone partnership as part of a series of initiatives aimed at deepening cooperation among the expanded grouping of emerging economies.
Speaking at the closing session of the BRICS summit in New Delhi, Xi said China would take the lead in establishing the BRICS AI Open Source Zone to promote cooperation on large language models, AI training and the development of an open AI ecosystem.
He also proposed a BRICS Special Economic Zone partnership and said China would host a BRICS Service Trade Forum next year to boost trade and investment ties among member countries.

Xi said the success of the "Greater BRICS Initiative" depends on laying a solid foundation for pragmatic cooperation, according to Xinhua.
"Greater BRICS countries should further cooperate, maintain the stability of industrial and supply chains and cultivate an integrated market," Xi told the summit.
BRICS has expanded beyond its original members – Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa – to include Iran, Indonesia, Egypt, Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates.
The grouping, founded nearly two decades ago, has sought to increase the influence of emerging economies and promote an alternative to a global order long dominated by the United States and other Western powers.
BRICS also has 10 partner countries across Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Middle East, further expanding its reach across the Global South.
