What Mamdani says about Jewish community reactions to his outspoken criticism of Israel
Addressing the reactions from Jewish voters to his outspoken stance on Israel, Mamdani said that several Jewish New Yorkers have echoed the same conclusions drawn by Israeli historians and even former Israeli leaders, reports Geo News.
New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani has said that many Jewish Americans share his criticism of Israel's actions in Gaza, noting that there is a "wide diversity of opinion" within the community.
Addressing the reactions from Jewish voters to his outspoken stance on Israel, Mamdani said that several Jewish New Yorkers have echoed the same conclusions drawn by Israeli historians and even former Israeli leaders, reports Geo News.
"They are echoing the words of a former Israeli prime minister, who just a few weeks ago said that what we're doing in Gaza is a war of devastation — limitless, indiscriminate, criminal and cruel killing of civilians," he said.
Mamdani, a 33-year-old Indian-origin Democrat and socialist, has been one of the most vocal critics of Israeli aggression in Gaza, calling it "genocide" during his campaign.
In some TV interviews, he has also said that, as mayor, he would order the arrest of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he were to visit New York City.
The mayoral candidate said his campaign aims to unite Jewish, Muslim, and other New Yorkers "from all backgrounds" under shared values of justice and human rights.
He emphasised that his criticism of Israel stems from his belief in universal human rights, not from bias against any community.
Furthermore, Mamdani had also labelled Indian PM Narendra Modi a "war criminal" just like Netanyahu for the 2002 Gujarat riots.
