US reaffirms support for Moroccan sovereignty over Sahara
Trump expresses his commitment to continue collaborating with Morocco to promote regional stability, prosperity, and peace

US President Donald Trump has reaffirmed the longstanding US position recognizing Morocco's sovereignty over the Sahara and reiterated Washington's support for the Moroccan Autonomy Proposal as the only basis for a just and lasting solution to the regional dispute.
In a message addressed to His Majesty King Mohammed VI, President Trump emphasized, "The United States recognizes Moroccan sovereignty over Sahara and supports Morocco's serious, credible, and realistic Autonomy Proposal as the only basis for a just and lasting solution to the dispute."
He went on to express his congratulations to the King and the Moroccan people, underscoring the strength of the US-Morocco partnership.
President Trump concluded his message by expressing his commitment to continue collaborating with Morocco to promote regional stability, prosperity, and peace.
This official stance was further echoed during a recent diplomatic visit to Algeria by Massad Boulos, a senior adviser to President Trump.
Boulos gave an exclusive interview on 4 August 2025 to El Watan-dz, an Algerian media outlet, where he firmly reiterated the US position.
"The United States continues to believe that genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is the only viable solution," Boulos stated.
He also responded to criticisms voiced by Algerian officials after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio reaffirmed the same position.
According to Boulos, Rubio had simply reiterated what President Trump had previously made clear, "The United States recognizes Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara and supports Morocco's autonomy proposal as the only basis for a fair and lasting resolution to the conflict."
Boulos further stressed Washington's call for all parties to engage without delay in negotiations, using the Moroccan autonomy plan as the sole framework for reaching a mutually acceptable solution.
He added that the United States stands ready to facilitate progress toward this goal.
This unified American message- delivered both in a personal letter from President Trump to HIS Majesty King Mohammed VI and through diplomatic channels in Algiers -reflects the continuity and firmness of the US position on the Sahara issue.
The alignment of diplomatic voices, from the President himself to his top foreign policy advisers, highlights Washington's commitment to supporting Morocco's territorial integrity and advancing a peaceful resolution through the Moroccan Autonomy initiative.
