The US president also warned that Washington would respond “very hard” if protesters in Iran were harmed.
Amid a sharp escalation in ongoing protests in Iran, US President Donald Trump on Friday suggested that the country's 86-year-old Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei may be seeking to flee.
In an interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity, Trump was asked whether he was aware of reports suggesting that Khamenei could be heading to Russia.
"He's looking to go someplace. It's getting very bad," Trump said in response.
The US president also warned that Washington would respond "very hard" if protesters in Iran were harmed.
"Well, we're going to hit them hard. We're ready to do it. If they do that, we're going to hit them hard," Trump said, after claiming that people were being gunned down, imprisoned, hanged and killed.
