US to close consulate in Peshawar, shift duties to Islamabad embassy
Despite the change, Washington said its policy priorities in Pakistan remain unchanged
The US will phase out its consulate general in Peshawar, transferring responsibility for diplomatic engagement with Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province to its embassy in Islamabad, the US State Department said.
The department said the decision reflects a focus on staff safety and more efficient use of resources. It did not specify a timeline for the closure.
Despite the change, Washington said its policy priorities in Pakistan remain unchanged, adding that it will continue engagement with local communities and officials in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to support economic ties, regional security and broader US interests.
The US said it remains committed to its relationship with Pakistan through its diplomatic missions in Islamabad, Karachi and Lahore.
