Modi, Trump hold telephonic talks on key regional and global developments
The conversation between the two leaders took place days after Russian President Vladimir Putin visited New Delhi and held talks with Modi
US President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi today (11 December) held a telephonic conversation, during which they discussed key regional and global developments and agreed "to work closely to address shared challenges and advance common interests in the evolving geopolitical landscape".
A statement issued by the Indian Prime Minister's office said that during the telephonic conversation, "PM Modi and Trump also spoke about key regional and global developments. They agreed to work closely to address shared challenges and advance common interests in the evolving geopolitical landscape."
Modi and Trump reiterated that India and the United States will continue to work closely together to advance global peace, stability and prosperity, said the statement.
In a post on X, Modi also shared: "Had a very warm and engaging conversation with President Trump. We reviewed the progress in our bilateral relations and discussed regional and international developments.
"India and the US will continue to work together for global peace, stability and prosperity."
The two leaders also reviewed the progress of the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership and "expressed satisfaction with the steady strengthening of bilateral cooperation across a broad range of areas", said the statement.
Modi and Trump "discussed ways to sustain momentum in efforts to enhance bilateral trade", it added.
They also exchanged views on expanding cooperation in critical technologies, energy, defence and security and other priority sectors linked to the implementation of the India-US COMPACT (Catalyzing Opportunities for Military Partnership, Accelerated Commerce and Technology) for the 21st century.
The conversation between the two leaders took place days after Russian President Vladimir Putin visited New Delhi and held talks with Modi. It was Putin's first state visit to India since the Ukraine war began in February 2022.
The Modi-Trump telephonic talk, amidst the tariff battle between the two countries, came as the two-day talks between Indian and US trade negotiators ended in New Delhi today.
In August this year, the US imposed a 50% duty on imports from India, including a 25% tariff as a punitive measure for New Delhi buying crude oil from Russia. India has denied the US charge that India's purchase of discounted Russian oil was helping Moscow's conflict in Ukraine.
