Major part of Tripura’s border with Bangladesh fenced: State govt

Tripura has completed barbed wire fencing along a major part of its 856km border with Bangladesh, leaving roughly 50km unfenced, the state government has recently said.
The fencing has been set up along a total of 805.99 kilometres, the state Home Department told the assembly on Friday (4 September).
The department provided the information in a written reply to a question from Tipra Motha MLA Ranjit Debbarma, an ally of the ruling BJP.

Debbarma sought details on the progress of the fencing, the stretches where work remains incomplete and measures being taken to expedite the project.
Fencing remains incomplete in several areas, including Belonia in South Tripura district; Longtharai Valley, Kamalpur, Ambassa and Gandacherra in Dhalai district; Kanchanpur in North Tripura; and Khowai and Sonamura in Sepahijala district, according to the department.
The Tripura government has repeatedly raised the issue with the Indian government, seeking intervention to ensure that the remaining work is completed at the earliest, it said.
The department attributed the delay in fencing the remaining 50km to geographical and operational challenges, including steep and elevated terrain, rivers and streams along proposed fencing routes, objections from the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and delays by construction agencies.
