On June 13, the head of Iran's armed forces, Major General Mohammad Bagheri, was killed in an Israeli airstrike. Two days after the assassination, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei announced the name of the new army chief. He appointed Major General Amir Hatemi as the new army chief.
