India's Christian community in the face of Hindutva politics
In recent years, Christmas in India has become a time of fear and uncertainty for the Christian community, not of celebration. Their religious freedom is increasingly being curtailed by the political and social influence of radical Hindutva. There have been increasing allegations of harassment and obstruction during Christmas celebrations, church services and festivals. Critics see some government decisions, including the cancellation of the Christmas holiday in Kerala, as a continued message of majoritarianism. According to human rights organizations, the Christian community is increasingly being marginalized through these incidents.
