In 2018, then-U.S. President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew the United States from the nuclear deal and reimposed harsh sanctions on Iran. According to widespread reports, Iran gradually began breaching the terms of the agreement in response—most notably by increasing its uranium enrichment levels from 20 percent to as high as 60 percent.
