Indian Space Research Organisation's (ISRO) Navigation with Indian Constellation (NavIC) is coming soon to millions of Android phones in India in an attempt to replace GPS.

A report by the Hindustan Times says that the NavIC satellite technology is designed to deliver precise location information to Indian consumers and even of neighbouring countries.

Now NavIC is ready for commercial use in Android smartphones as the chipset giant Qualcomm, announced new processors Snapdragon 720G, 662 and 460 with the ISRO technology, which will for the first time support up to seven satellite constellations simultaneously, including the use of all of NavIC's operating satellites.

The integration will help deliver more accurate location performance, faster time-to-first-fix (TTFF) position acquisition, and improved robustness of location-based services, Qualcomm added.

"ISRO is satisfied with the efforts of Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. towards incorporating NavIC, it's availability across multiple mobile platforms will help enhance the geolocation capabilities of smartphones in the region and bring the benefits of this native solution to Indian consumers for their day-to-day use", said ISRO chairman Dr K Sivan.

Dominators of mid-range Android smartphones in India, Xiaomi and Realme are likely to be the first adopters of this new technology as both pushed for ISRO's NavIC.

ISRO's NavIC adoption will help reduce dependence on American GPS technology for navigation allowing apps such as Uber and google maps to deliver more accurate location information.

Furthermore, this technology can help in disaster management, vehicle tracking and fleet management, visual and voice navigation for drivers, aerial and marine navigation, etc.
