Digital security system coming to stop rumours, cyber harassment

The Information and Communication Technology (ICT) division is trying to introduce a digital security system against fake contents, rumours and cyber harassment.

The resolution comes following different rumours that were spread among the masses due to lack of awareness and took life of many innocent people.

State Minister for ICT Zunaid Ahmed Palak made this remark while addressing the grand finale ceremony of the Digital Khichuri Challenge as its chief guest.

"The social stigma associated with Covid-19 is worsening the situation. Technology and awareness can help to reduce it," added Palak.

He urged all to be more conscious while using social media.

The Digital Khichuri Challenge is a competition for the young Bangladeshi change-makers who are intent to make the digital platform safer and more tolerant.

The programme organised by UNDP's Partnerships for a Tolerant and Inclusive Bangladesh project.

Nguyen Thi Ngoc Van, deputy resident representative for Bangladesh of United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), said, "The Covid-19 outbreak is not merely a health crisis but also one that creates discrimination, social stigma and domestic violence in the country."

Digital Khichuri Challenge was organised to promote digital solutions to address those stigmas and discriminations, she added.

The grand finale of the competition was held virtually on Tuesday.

In the competition, "BD Fact Check" became the champion and "Swapno" secured the second place at the startup level while "Punchforon" appeared the champion and "Swayong" earned the second place at the idea level.

The winning teams received a prize money of $5,000 and a mentorship support from YY Goshti - Bangladesh's first social business incubator.

Among others, Robert Stoelman, project manager at UNDP, and Tina F Jabeen, investment advisor at Startup Bangladesh, ICT Division, also spoke at the programme.
