BRT buses

Chaotic vehicle movement in the bus lanes of the Dhaka Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) in Uttara on Saturday. The 20.5km route between Dhaka airport and Gazipur is expected to enter full operation in December 2025. The dedicated bus lanes have reduced space for other lanes already causing traffic woes, and is feared to make congestion worse when only BRT buses will be allowed to use the lanes. It was foretold BRT would lead to traffic chaos. Now IMED confirms

IMED raised critical concerns about the system’s design, questioning whether its dedicated lanes might worsen congestion in non-BRT lanes instead of easing the city’s infamous gridlock

The designated route of the bus spans approximately 42 kilometres that covers Gulistan, Shahbagh, Khamar Bari, the Elevated Expressway, Dhaka Airport, Gazipur Chowrasta, and finally Shibbari. Photo: Mehedi Hasan
