Simeone calls for focus on Champions League derby after Atletico go top of LaLiga
Atletico's victory at the Civitas Metropolitano, sealed by substitute Julian Alvarez's second-half goal, put them on 56 points, two clear of Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has urged his players to shift their focus to the upcoming Champions League showdown with Real Madrid, despite their 1-0 win over Athletic Bilbao on 1 march, which saw them move to the top of LaLiga.
Atletico's victory at the Civitas Metropolitano, sealed by substitute Julian Alvarez's second-half goal, put them on 56 points, two clear of Barcelona and Real Madrid. However, Simeone is wary of getting carried away, with the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie against Real looming.
"We have a big game in the Champions League, and right now, we just need to focus on that and get well rested during these three days off," said Simeone. "What we need to do is continue to strengthen our collective work and not lose that focus."
The Argentine manager also praised Alvarez, who scored shortly after coming on for Alexander Sorloth. "Today we faced a very difficult opponent. They defended well and had good chances with Nico and Inaki Williams. We were lucky to have Julian in the second half and for him to finish the counter-attack the way he did," he added.
Simeone expressed his delight when Alvarez joined from Manchester City, noting the forward's modesty and versatility. "Sometimes players come in, they are special, and as a coach, you just know that. They are different, and I love that."
Atletico's lead at the top of LaLiga remains precarious, with Barcelona hosting Real Sociedad on Sunday. Real Madrid, who lost 2-1 to Real Betis, sit third with the same points as Barcelona.
