'Shakib told me we have a great chance in the WC': Papon

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Nazmul Hassan Papon said that he had a discussion with Shakib regarding the plans for the World Cup and the southpaw told Papon that Bangladesh have a very good chance in the tournament.

Bangladesh apparently had a great preparation for the upcoming T20 World Cup after successive series wins against Australia and New Zealand. They will be on high morale when they begin their World Cup campaign next month.

Ace all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan played a vital role in both the series wins and he was the player of the series against Australia last month. Even though he is having a poor run of form with the bat ever since he returned from his ban, Shakib is having fun with the ball against anyone he is playing.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Nazmul Hassan Papon said that he had a discussion with Shakib regarding the plans for the World Cup and the southpaw told Papon that Bangladesh have a very good chance in the tournament.

"I discussed it with Shakib today. We couldn't implement the plans we had ahead of the World Cup. Bringing teams here or going overseas to play series was definitely a challenging thing. But we haven't done too badly. Shakib told me that we have a good chance in the tournament. When a player of his stature says so, it means the whole team is confident," the BCB boss said in the press brief at Mirpur on Friday.

Shakib picked up four wickets in the first two matches against New Zealand and is now two wickets away from creating history. Shakib will become the highest wicket-taker in T20I history and the first-ever player in international cricket to score 12000 runs and pick up 600 wickets.

Bangladesh, who failed to qualify directly for the tournament, will have to go through the first round, where they have to finish in the top two before they get the ticket to the main event.

The squad will leave for Oman on October 4. They will have a camp there before travelling to UAE for two official practice matches.

Bangladesh, placed in Group B of Round 1 stage, will take on Scotland in the evening match on the opening day. They will face hosts Oman and Papua New Guinea on October 19 and 21 respectively. All three games will be played in Muscat.
