Sabbir throws brick and racially abuses Elias Sunny in DPL match

Controversies and Sabbir Rahman go hand in hand. The 29-year old has grabbed the headline for negative reasons multiple times but what he did on Wednesday was beyond imagination. He picked up a brick and threw it at Elias Sunny, who was fielding at that time. Sunny was even abused by Sabbir.

The enraged Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club authorities have already lodged a written complaint to the Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis (CCDM). Sheikh Jamal authorities have sent a letter to CCDM chairman and BCB director Kazi Inam Ahmed seeking disciplinary action against Sabbir.

The incident happened on Wednesday, during a Dhaka Premier League T20 match between Sheikh Jamal and Old DOHS at BKSP-3. Old DOHS were batting then, chasing a target of 121 runs. Sheikh Jamal spinner Elias Sunny was fielding at deep square leg. Suddenly, Legends of Rupganj cricketer Sabbir Rahman threw a brick at Elias Sunny from outside the ground.

Not only that, Sabbir started to abuse Elias Sunny, which included racial abuses. Earlier, while batting in the match against Sheikh Jamal, Sabbir got into an argument with Elias Sunny. Sheikh Jamal sources said that Sabbir had insulted Sunny that day as well.

Legends of Rupganj, for whom Sabbir was playing, were going to face Partex Sporting Club at BKSP-4 at 1.30 pm. The cricketers waiting to play that match were watching the Sheikh Jamal-DOHS match, as it was taking place in the nearest ground. That was when Elias Sunny was attacked by Sabbir.

Sheikh Jamal wrote in the letter to the CCDM, "With great sadness, we inform you that during the match between Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club Limited and Old DOHS Sports Club on June 16, 2021, at the BKSP-3, Legends of Rupganj player Mr Sabbir Rahman Rumman threw bricks at Elias Sunny from outside the field without any reason."

The letter further said, "He used abusive language calling him 'kailla' (black). As a professional cricketer, such behaviour is not only indecent but also a punishable offence. In this case, you are requested to take disciplinary action against Mr Sabbir Rahman Rumman."

The Business Standard (TBS) contacted Sabbir asking about the incident but he denied all such allegations: "I have not done any such thing. There are match referees and umpires present too. I don't know where these allegations came from. Maybe people like to hear these kinds of stories about me."

In an age where players take the knee to get rid of racism, it's an extremely shocking and vile act from a player that has represented the national team as is expected to be an idol for millions.
