"First, I need to see how I feel during training. If I don't believe I can win in singles, I'll be the first to step aside," Nadal said to the Spanish Tennis Federation on 16 November. "I've told captain David Ferrer not to factor in that this is my last week as a professional."
A career-defining chapter
Nadal's Davis Cup legacy includes leading Spain to victory four times, with his most recent triumph coming in Madrid five years ago. Now ranked 155 in the world, his last singles match came in July, with injuries limiting him to just four appearances in 2023.
Carlos Alcaraz, the reigning French Open and Wimbledon champion, will headline Spain's campaign. The 21-year-old has expressed his admiration for Nadal and the significance of playing alongside him in his final tournament.
"Rafa's retirement makes this tournament incredibly special. I want him to go out on a high note," Alcaraz said. The duo teamed up in doubles earlier this year at the Paris Olympics, adding to their shared history on the court.
The road to the final
Spain will face the Netherlands on 19 November in the quarter-finals, with a potential semi-final clash against either Germany or Canada. Many are anticipating a showdown in the final between Spain and defending champions Italy, led by world number one Jannik Sinner.
Italy, who ended a 47-year Davis Cup drought last year, remain favourites. Sinner's stellar season, which includes Australian Open and US Open titles, has been overshadowed by a pending doping appeal. However, he was cleared of wrongdoing in August after testing positive for traces of a banned substance in March.
Italy will play Argentina in their quarter-final, with the United States and Australia facing off on the other side of the draw. The Americans, 32-time champions, boast a strong team featuring US Open finalist Taylor Fritz. Australia, led by captain Lleyton Hewitt, aim to add to their 28 titles after finishing as runners-up last year.

Nadal's achievements on the international stage include singles gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and doubles gold in Rio eight years later. His legendary career reached its pinnacle with his 14th French Open title in 2022, marking his 22nd Grand Slam.

Alcaraz highlighted the emotional stakes, saying, "Playing for Spain is the greatest honour. After the recent floods in Valencia, it feels even more important to bring joy to the country."
