'I always fought for the yellow jersey': Neymar hangs up his boots for Brazil

Brazil forward Neymar has officially announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to a glittering 16-year career with the Seleção following the 2026 Fifa World Cup.

The 34-year-old confirmed his decision after Santos' 4-2 victory over Universidad Central, saying his time with the national team had come to an end, reports Goal.com.

"My time with the national team is over. I believe I've made history there. I was very happy, lived through so many things, gave my blood and my life and always fought for the yellow jersey," Neymar told post-match press conference.

"But I think I don't want that anymore now."

Neymar joined Brazil's 2026 World Cup squad in the United States, Canada and Mexico despite not being fully fit. He made only two appearances during the tournament, scoring a penalty against Norway in the Round of 16.

Brazil's campaign ended at that stage as Norway secured a 2-1 victory, extending the five-time world champions' wait for a sixth World Cup title, which they have not won since 2002.

The Santos forward retires as Brazil's all-time leading goalscorer, having scored 80 goals and provided 59 assists in 130 international appearances. 

He represented his country at four World Cups and remains one of the most influential players of his generation.

Neymar made his senior debut for Brazil in 2010 and went on to win numerous honours with the national team, including the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup and an Olympic gold medal at the Rio 2016 Games.

His contract with Santos is set to expire at the end of 2026, with the Brazilian yet to announce where he will continue his club career.

With his international chapter now closed, Neymar leaves behind a legacy defined by extraordinary talent, unforgettable moments and an enduring place in Brazilian football history.
