Emiliano Martinez provokes PSG fans with cap ahead of Champions League clash

Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has caused a stir ahead of Wednesday's Champions League quarter-final by wearing a provocative baseball cap aimed at Paris Saint-Germain supporters.

The cap, which features a French cockerel alongside the Argentina badge and the four trophies he has won with the national team, pokes fun at France's defeat to Argentina in the 2022 World Cup final.

Martinez had previously frustrated French supporters with his actions during the penalty shootout in the World Cup final in Qatar, where his save from Kingsley Coman helped Argentina secure the victory. His behaviour during the celebrations also angered France, particularly when he brandished a doll of French star Kylian Mbappe in Buenos Aires.

However, Villa manager Unai Emery, who has worked with Martinez both at Arsenal and Aston Villa, acknowledged the Argentine goalkeeper's growth in recent years. Emery stated that Martinez has matured significantly, saying, "He is mature. He is responsible. He is getting better at controlling his emotions."

Reflecting on his time at Villa, Emery added, "When he arrived at Aston Villa five years ago and now, he is a different Emiliano. He is more mature, a better player, and a better goalkeeper. My conversations with him now are always the same. He is one of the best goalkeepers in the world – he received the award for it here in Paris."

Emery also emphasised the importance of Martinez focusing on his football and managing his emotions amid the growing recognition of his achievements. "Now, focus on football, focus on individual challenges, and try to manage everything you are achieving. Try to control the emotions it brings you."

As Villa aim to reach the Champions League semi-finals for the first time since 1983, they face a PSG team that has impressed in knocking out Liverpool in the last round and secured the Ligue 1 title at the weekend.
