BCB takes control of BPL player payments after recurring issues

The 11th edition of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) concluded with Barishal securing their second title, but financial concerns overshadowed the tournament.

Payment issues persisted, affecting both local and foreign players, particularly in teams like Durbar Rajshahi and Chittagong Kings. This raised doubts over the future participation of overseas cricketers in the league.

In response, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has introduced a new policy to address these concerns. Moving forward, the board will take full responsibility for managing all financial and logistical matters related to foreign players in the BPL, ensuring a more transparent and efficient payment system.

On 8 February, the BCB confirmed this decision through an official statement, outlining key measures to protect player interests and maintain the league's credibility.

BCB to oversee player payment and logistics of BPL

Board plans stringent financial protocols

DHAKA, 8 February: The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is dedicated to ensuring the efficient operation of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) and the welfare of all participating players. In response to recent developments, the BCB is implementing the following measures:

Direct management of overseas player payments – The BCB will assume responsibility for the contract and match fees of all international players signed from the BPL draft and will ensure timely and transparent payments.

Comprehensive logistical support – The BCB will oversee all logistical arrangements for the smooth return of overseas players to their respective destinations upon the conclusion of their BPL commitments.

Enhanced financial protocols with franchises – The BCB will collaborate closely with BPL franchises to establish stricter financial protocols, safeguarding player interests and streamlining payment processes.

BCB president FaruqueAhmed said: "These initiatives underscore the BCB's commitment to upholding the integrity of the BPL and providing a professional experience for all players, both domestic and international. The BCB will continue to engage with all stakeholders to strengthen the operational and financial aspects of the league."

The issue of delayed payments has been a recurring problem in the BPL. Tom Moffat, chief executive of the World Cricketers' Association, recently expressed concerns that the continued non-payment of players could deter top-quality talent from participating in future editions. He described the situation as "frustrating and unacceptable," warning that such issues not only damage the league's reputation but also impact player performances.
