The Bangladesh women's youth hockey team endured a crushing 11-0 defeat at the hands of Japan in their opening match of the U-18 Asia Cup Hockey tournament, held in Dazhou, China, on Friday.
Making their debut in the competition, the Bangladeshi side managed to hold off the Japanese attack relatively well until the third quarter.
Japan, a dominant force in Asian women's hockey, scored just once in the first quarter and added three more across the next two quarters.
However, Bangladesh's defensive resolve collapsed in the final quarter, with Japan netting an additional seven goals in the last 15 minutes.
Following this humbling loss, Bangladesh are set to face a comparatively easier opponent in Uzbekistan in their second match tomorrow.
In contrast, the men's team, who began their campaign with a confident 3-0 victory over Hong Kong, will take on Sri Lanka in their second fixture, also scheduled for tomorrow.
