Xbox's disc-to-digital feature is now available to everyone

Xbox is rolling out its disc-to-digital programme to all users, allowing players to claim digital licences for most physical Xbox One and Xbox Series X games they already own.

The feature was previously being tested with Xbox Insiders but is now available more broadly as of 29 September. It allows players to put a supported game disc into an Xbox Series X and claim its digital licence through the console.

The process is relatively straightforward. Once a physical game is inserted, players can open its app menu from the Xbox home screen and select the new 'Claim digital licence' option. After claiming it, the game can be accessed digitally without needing to keep the disc inserted.

Xbox also says players can automatically claim a digital licence simply by playing a supported physical game.

The feature could make managing physical game collections more convenient, particularly for players who regularly switch between discs. However, not every physical Xbox game is supported, with the programme covering most Xbox One and Xbox Series X discs rather than every title.

There is also a practical consideration for players with multiple discs. Xbox's support guidance recommends preventing games from automatically installing when a disc is inserted if they only want to claim the licence.

With the feature now available to all Xbox users, physical game owners have another way to combine their existing collections with the convenience of digital licences.
