A theatrical start to Amar Ekushey Natya Utshab 2025
Moral reckonings and martial mishaps are the central themes of the two plays that start the 10-day-long event at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy

The Amar Ekushey Natya Utshab 2025 began with a delightful evening of theatre, showcasing the power of storytelling to reflect the complexities of the human experience.
On the first night, Natyatirtha took the stage with 'Dweep,' a play written by Utpal Dutt and directed by Tapan Hafiz. Featuring strong performances by Tapan Hafiz, Shashsur Rahman Peru, Kohinur Alam, Dr Zillur Rahman, and Madhabi Lata, Dweep explores the perilous path of a political activist who abandons his ideals.
Dweep tells the story of Milon Sarker, a man who, swayed by the influence of a newspaper owner, spreads harmful information, betraying his own beliefs. However, his conscience eventually catches up with him, and through the efforts of his friends, he confronts his moral failings. The play reaches a poignant climax as Milon realises the potential harm his actions could inflict on his fiancée, leading to his redemption.

Director Tapan Hafiz emphasised the play's contemporary relevance, "When I had the chance to direct this play, the world was in a tough spot. Why is there so much trouble, chaos, and dishonesty? I found that it's because people abandon what they believe in. That's why this play is so important today," he stated.
Following the intense drama of Dweep, Rangapeeth Natya Dol brought laughter to the stage with 'The Proposal,' an adaptation of Anton Chekhov's story by Romen Lahiri, directed by Golam Zilani. Featuring Golam Zilani, Shimul Bishwas, and Rani Begum, the play offered a lighthearted counterpoint to the evening's earlier drama.

The Proposal is an amusing tale of love and marriage, centred on Chattujya Moshai, his daughter Bindu Basini, and their neighbour Sadanand. Despite their mutual affection, Bindu Basini and Sadanand struggle to express their feelings. Chattujya Moshai, eager to see his daughter married, welcomes Sadanand's proposal, but comedic complications ensue, ultimately leading to a joyous wedding.
These opening performances set the stage for a ten-day festival, running from 20 to 28 February, featuring two plays each night. Theatre groups such as Batikrami Natya Goshthi, Padatik Natya Sangshad TSC, and Dhaka Theater will grace the stage, contributing to the rich tapestry of the Amar Ekushey Natya Utshab 2025.
The festival itself stands as a testament to the enduring power of art in Bangladeshi society.
As Professor Dr Syed Jamil Ahmed, Director General of the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, declared at the inaugural ceremony, "We are going through a difficult time. No matter what, we must move forward. Our theatre, Baul songs, and kite festivals—none of these should be stopped anywhere. If they are hindered for any reason, it will not only harm our image abroad but also stifle artistic practice within the country."
The festival, organised by the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy and the Bangladesh Group Theatre Federation, with the support of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, serves as a vital platform for artistic expression and a reminder of culture's essential role in shaping the nation.
