Speculation grows over female Voldemort in Harry Potter reboot
Rumours around HBO's upcoming Harry Potter adaptation have sparked debate among fans after reports suggested the new series could feature a female version of Lord Voldemort.
Entertainment scooper Daniel Richtman claimed on X that the studio is auditioning both male and female actors for the role, fuelling speculation about a possible gender switch. The series, which will retell The Philosopher's Stone, is expected to bring Voldemort into the story earlier than the original films, potentially through flashbacks and his possession of Professor Quirrell.
The idea has divided fans online. While some mocked the possibility with names like "Lady Voldemort" and "She-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named," others rejected the idea outright. One user wrote, "Voldemort should not be a female character. Put the whole thing in the trash if they do that."
Casting rumours have added to the speculation. Actor Cillian Murphy dismissed links to the role, saying it would be "really hard to follow anything Ralph Fiennes does," calling Fiennes an "absolute acting legend." Fiennes himself previously described Murphy as a "wonderful suggestion." Other fan favourites include Tom Hiddleston, though HBO has made no official announcements.
The reboot is expected to reintroduce Voldemort from its first season, including flashbacks to Harry's parents' murder and the Dark Lord's early return.
