Selim Al Deen: 18 years of remembering Bangladesh’s theatre pioneer

Today marks the 18th death anniversary of the celebrated playwright and Ekushey Padak recipient, Dr Selim Al Deen, the founder of the Department of Drama and Dramatics at Jahangirnagar University. He passed away on this day in 2008 while undergoing treatment in Dhaka. Followers and admirers are paying homage to this pioneer of Bangla theatre with deep respect and love.
To honour his memory, 'Dhaka Theatre and Bangladesh Gram Theatre' have organised a four-day programme. Today, tributes will be offered at Selim Al Deen's grave at Jahangirnagar University.
On 17 January, Dhaka Theatre will stage its play 'Nimajjan' at the National Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy. A seminar titled "Revolutionary Narratives of Selim Al Deen" will be held on 18 January, followed by a multimedia presentation of his works on 19 January at the Studio Theatre Hall.
Additionally, the Selim Al Deen Collection organised a remembrance festival from 10 to 14 January at Shilpakala Academy, showcasing his plays, poetry, and creative works. His play 'Dhaboman' was also staged during this event.
Selim Al Deen spent his life advocating for the preservation and development of Bengali heritage, delving deeply into traditional village performances like pala, jari, and jatra. His unique theatrical style blended traditional and global elements, creating a lasting impact.
He founded Dhaka Theatre in 1973 and continuously explored innovative theatrical techniques. While best known as a playwright, Selim Al Deen contributed significantly to poetry, fiction, research, and music. His masterpieces include Hath Hodai, which reflects the lives of coastal communities, and Jaibati Konnyar Mon, a work rejecting colonial literary norms in favour of medieval Bengali traditions.
Some of his works, such as Chaka and Kirtankhola, were adapted into films. Selim Al Deen also wrote the dialogues for the 1994 film Ekattorer Jishu. At Jahangirnagar University, he established the Drama and Dramatics Department in 1986.
Born on 18 August 1949, in Feni's Senirkhil village, Selim Al Deen pursued education across different schools due to his father's job. He completed his BA and MA in Bangla literature and later earned a PhD from Jahangirnagar University, focusing on Bangali drama.
Throughout his career, Selim Al Deen received numerous accolades, including the Bangla Academy Literary Award (1984), Ekushey Padak (2007), and the National Film Award (1993). His legacy continues to inspire future generations in the fields of art and literature.
