Netflix greenlights KPop Demon Hunters sequel following record success
Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation have officially confirmed that a sequel to the record-breaking animated hit KPop Demon Hunters is in development. The announcement comes as directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans sign an exclusive multi-year deal with the streaming giant, with the follow-up film currently targeted for a 2029 release.
The original feature, which follows a fictional girl group balancing global superstardom with supernatural combat, has become a cultural phenomenon. It currently holds the title of Netflix's most-watched film of all time, bolstered by a successful theatrical sing-along run in late 2025. The news arrives at a high point for the franchise, as it competes for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song at tonight's Academy Awards.
Director Maggie Kang expressed "immense pride" in the global resonance of the Korean-led story, promising that the sequel will further expand the vibrant universe. Netflix's Chief Content Officer, Bela Bajaria, noted that the film has "ignited a global fandom" across generations.
