The Iron Throne comes to cinemas
First came House of the Dragon, then A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms — and now winter is heading to the cineplexes.
Warner Bros. is developing a feature-length film set in the world of Game of Thrones, with screenwriter Beau Willimon attached to pen the script.
Willimon, best known for creating House of Cards and writing on Andor, has reportedly submitted a first draft. No director or cast members have been confirmed.
According to industry reports, the project is "firmly" in development and is expected to be a large-scale cinematic prequel. The story is said to centre on Aegon I Targaryen – also known as Aegon the Conqueror – who united six of the seven kingdoms roughly 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones. His conquest laid the foundation for the Targaryen dynasty and the rule of the Iron Throne, a narrative strand that underpins much of George R. R. Martin's fantasy canon.
The original series, which ran from 2011 to 2019, became a cultural juggernaut, dominating ratings, awards circuits and social media discourse for nearly a decade. Its controversial final season did little to blunt the franchise's commercial power, and HBO has since treated Westeros as premium intellectual property ripe for expansion.
The film has been described as a "Dune-sized" epic, signalling ambitions for a major theatrical spectacle. However, its future may depend on corporate developments. Warner Bros. is currently in the process of being sold to Paramount Skydance, and new leadership could potentially reassess projects in the pipeline. Paramount chief executive David Ellison has pledged to release 30 films theatrically should the merger proceed, suggesting a need for high-profile franchises.
The proposed film arrives amid renewed momentum in Martin's screen universe, with House of the Dragon returning for a third series and further adaptations in development.
