The Iron Lady at 101: The grocer's daughter who remade Britain

Born on 13 October 1925, Margaret Thatcher became Britain's first female prime minister and reshaped the nation's economy and politics during 11 years in power. Today marks what would have been her 101st birthday.

She was one of the most consequential and controversial political figures of the 20th century. Born in Grantham, England, she rose from a modest family to lead her country. Her uncompromising style, free-market convictions, and willingness to challenge established institutions earned her a name the world still knows: the "Iron Lady". More than a decade after her death, admirers and critics remain divided over her legacy.

Born Margaret Hilda Roberts, she was the daughter of a grocer who was also a local politician. She grew up above the family shop, where her father's commitment to public service and conservative values shaped her outlook. Her early life was a world away from the corridors of power she would later dominate.

She studied chemistry at Somerville College, Oxford, graduating in 1947, and became involved in Conservative politics, eventually leading the Oxford University Conservative Association. She worked as a research chemist before training as a barrister and entering Parliament.

Her breakthrough came in 1959, when she was elected MP for Finchley in north London. In 1975, she defeated the sitting party leader to become the first woman to lead a major British political party. In 1979, she led the Conservatives to victory in the general election and entered Downing Street as prime minister on 4 May.

The rise of Thatcherism

Her government set out to transform an economy weighed down by high inflation, industrial unrest and stagnation. Her answer was privatisation, deregulation, a reduced role for the state and limits on trade union power. This political and economic approach, built around individual responsibility, private enterprise and open competition, became known as Thatcherism.

Major state-owned industries were sold off, financial markets were liberalised, and the government's role in the economy was redefined. Supporters argue that these reforms encouraged entrepreneurship, widened home ownership and modernised the British economy.

The cost was steep. Unemployment climbed sharply in the early years, while communities built around coal mining and manufacturing were devastated as traditional industries declined. The bitter 1984-85 miners' strike, which pitted her government against the National Union of Mineworkers, became one of the defining confrontations of her time in office.

To her admirers, Thatcher was a leader willing to make difficult decisions to restore national strength. To her critics, she deepened inequality, weakened organised labour and left industrial communities in lasting decline. The debate continues to shape assessments of her political record.

A formidable presence on the world stage

Her influence extended far beyond Britain. She forged a close partnership with US President Ronald Reagan, sharing his opposition to Soviet communism and his belief in free markets. As the Cold War entered its final chapter, she also developed a notable relationship with Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, whom she famously considered someone she could do business with.

In 1982, she led Britain through the Falklands War after Argentina invaded the South Atlantic islands claimed by the UK. Britain's victory strengthened her political standing and reinforced her reputation for resolve.

Her tenure also brought significant danger. In October 1984, an Irish Republican Army bomb tore through the hotel hosting the Conservative Party conference in Brighton. Thatcher escaped unharmed, but five people were killed in the attack.

She won three consecutive general elections and served as prime minister for more than 11 years. However, divisions within her party over Europe and fierce opposition to the unpopular poll tax gradually eroded her support. In November 1990, she resigned after losing the backing she needed to remain party leader.

A legacy that refuses to fade

After leaving office, Thatcher remained a prominent public voice and entered the House of Lords in 1992 as Baroness Thatcher. Her health declined in later years, and she died in London on 8 April 2013, aged 87.

Her legacy remains contested. She broke the highest glass ceiling in British politics, demonstrated extraordinary political resilience and transformed the relationship between the state, markets and workers. At the same time, the social divisions associated with her economic programme remain central to debates about her record.

On what would have been her 101st birthday, Thatcher's story is more than a tale of ambition and political success. It illustrates how a determined leader can change a country's direction, and how the arguments surrounding that transformation can outlast the leader by generations.

Whether admired or criticised, few British leaders have left such a profound mark on the country. The political and economic debates she helped shape continue to influence Britain today.
