Cyberpunk 2077 movie in development at Paramount
A film adaptation of the popular video game Cyberpunk 2077 is in development at Paramount, with Transformers producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura attached to the project.
CD Projekt Red, the developer and rights holder of the video game franchise, will also serve as a producer.
Released in December 2020, Cyberpunk 2077 is an open-world role-playing game set in Night City, a dystopian metropolis dominated by powerful corporations.
Players follow V, a mercenary who must work with the digital consciousness of rock star Johnny Silverhand, played by Keanu Reeves, to separate their minds while navigating the city's dangerous underworld.
Despite a troubled launch marked by performance issues, the game became a major commercial success, selling 40 million copies worldwide. Its expansion, Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty, has sold 15 million copies.
The project joins a growing list of video game adaptations targeting cinema audiences, following the box-office success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Five Nights at Freddy's and A Minecraft Movie.
Paramount is also developing a Call of Duty film directed by Peter Berg, who co-wrote the script with Taylor Sheridan. The studio's upcoming projects include Street Fighter, scheduled to hit theatres on 16 October.
