Beyond the crown: Miss World Bangladesh's mission for public health
Miss World Bangladesh 2026 Samanzar Sayeed has launched a nationwide hygiene awareness campaign ahead of the Miss World finals
For a few minutes on Tuesday afternoon, the familiar image of a beauty pageant transformed into something else entirely.
The launch of Hygiene for Health Bangladesh, the national advocacy campaign of Miss World Bangladesh 2026 Samanzar Sayeed, was more than the unveiling of a social initiative. Held on July 22 in partnership with Gulshan Society, the event also became the first time a government ministry formally stood alongside the Miss World Bangladesh platform, signaling a new chapter in how pageantry and public service can intersect in Bangladesh.
The event brought together Health Minister Sardar Md. Sakhawat Husain, MP, Dhaka North City Corporation Administrator Shafiqul Islam Milton, Gulshan Society President Barrister Omar Sadat, National Director of Miss World Bangladesh Azra Mahmood, representatives of schools, NGOs, corporate partners and dozens of young volunteers eager to become part of the campaign.
Since winning the Miss World Bangladesh title, Samanzar has been preparing not only for the international competition but also for the Beauty With a Purpose project that every Miss World contestant is expected to champion.
Her chosen cause is simple yet impactful: promoting hygiene as an accessible way to prevent disease while encouraging young people to become ambassadors for healthier communities.
Addressing the audience, Health Minister Sardar Md. Sakhawat Husain described hygiene as one of the country's most effective and affordable public health tools.
"Public health starts with simple, everyday habits," he said, commending the campaign for taking awareness directly to communities across Bangladesh.
For organisers, however, the minister's presence represented more than official recognition.
It marked a new chapter for the Miss World Bangladesh platform.
National Director Azra Mahmood said the organisation believes beauty pageants should produce ambassadors for social change rather than simply winners.
"Pageantry, done right, builds ambassadors," she said, adding that contestants are expected to leave with more than a crown—they should leave with a cause that creates lasting impact.
The message was echoed by Gulshan Society President Barrister Omar Sadat, who described the initiative as an example of meaningful collaboration between civic organisations and national platforms. Dhaka North City Corporation Administrator Shafiqul Islam Milton pledged support for the campaign, while Shaheen Anam MBE, Executive Director of Manusher Jonno Foundation, announced that her organisation and its partner NGOs would work alongside the initiative.
The campaign has already brought together a wide network of schools, NGOs, youth organisations and private-sector partners, with nationwide volunteer registration officially opening during the launch.
Away from the stage, another story unfolded.
Former contestants gathered around Samanzar, laughing, taking photographs and celebrating one another's achievements. Among them was first runner-up Swagata Saha Oishi, who attended the event after receiving a personal invitation.
Asked whether supporting someone who had technically been her competitor felt unusual, Oishi dismissed the idea of rivalry.
Instead, she described the contestants as close friends who had supported one another throughout rehearsals and continued to do so after the competition.
"We're a team," she said, adding that she would always stand beside Samanzar whenever she needed support.
Oishi also praised "Hygiene for Health Bangladesh," calling hygiene an issue of national and global importance and expressing confidence that the initiative would make a meaningful difference.
The ceremony concluded with the official launch of the campaign as the Health Minister joined Samanzar Sayeed, Azra Mahmood, Barrister Omar Sadat and Shafiqul Islam Milton in releasing pigeons and biodegradable balloons before opening nationwide volunteer registration.
