Bappa Mazumder lends voice to ‘Magurar Phool’

National Film Award-winning singer and music director Bappa Mazumder has lent his voice to Magurar Phool, a heart-rending song penned and composed by renowned poet, lyricist and composer Mahbubul Khalid. The piece was written in memory of the eight-year-old girl from Magura who died after falling victim to sexual violence, a tragedy that shocked the nation and sparked widespread outrage.
Joining Bappa in the vocals are young artistes Moutushi Khan, Mouli Majumder and Moumita Barua. The recording and mastering of the song have recently been completed, with musical arrangements by Sheikh Pulak and Roman Rahman. A music video is currently in production, featuring Bappa Mazumder himself along with other performers.
The song is expected to be released soon on Mahbubul Khalid's official music platform Khalid Sangeet (www.khalidsangeet.com), as well as on its corresponding YouTube and Facebook channels, and the Mahbubul A Khalid Facebook page.
Deeply moved by the brutal incident, Mahbubul Khalid wrote and composed the song as both a protest and a call for collective conscience. He said the piece was intended not only to commemorate the child's life but also to awaken social awareness so that such crimes are not repeated.
A prolific figure in contemporary Bangladeshi music, Mahbubul Khalid is known for writing songs on pressing social issues. To date, over 500 of his songs have been released under the banner of Khalid Sangeet, many of which he composed himself. Previous works addressing similar themes include songs based on the stories of Felani and Aduri—both victims of torture and injustice.
The tragic death of the child from Magura on 13 March 2025 has left a deep scar in the nation's collective memory. Through Magurar Phool, the lyricist calls on people to stand beside families who have lost their loved ones to such brutality and to pledge never to look away from injustice.
