Bangladeshi short film makes historic entry into Cannes

For the first time, a Bangladeshi short film has been officially selected for competition at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival.
'Ali', directed by Adnan Al Rajeev, will compete for the Palme d'Or in the 78th edition's short film category. This marks Bangladesh's debut in the official Cannes short film lineup. Shot in Sylhet in late 2024, Ali is co-produced by Tanvir Hossain of Bangladesh and Christine de Leon of the Philippines, under the line production company Runout Films.
The film explores a personal journey toward an inevitable truth. It is produced by the company Catalogue, co-founded by Rajeev and Hossain, aimed at fostering South and Southeast Asian cinematic collaboration. Notably, another Catalogue production from the Philippines, Agapito, also made the Cannes shortlist—an unusual achievement for a single production house.
