Momen urges Egypt to continue supporting Gambia on Rohingya issue

Foreign Minister, Dr AK Abdul Momen, on Sunday urged the government of Egypt to continue supporting Gambia on the Rohingya issue in the International Court of Justice.

He made the request during a meeting with Walid Ahmed Shamseldin, the outgoing Egyptian Ambassador to Bangladesh, according to a press release issued by the Foreign Ministry.

The Ambassador assured Momen that Egypt would continue to support the repatriation of the displaced Rohingyas to Myanmar.

During the meeting, the Foreign Minister stressed on enhancing bilateral trade cooperation between Bangladesh and Egypt and harnessing the potential of the two countries in this regard.

He called on Egypt's government to invest in Bangladesh's economic zones. He said Egypt could employ Bangladeshis skilled in information technology.

Momen proposed that Egypt could invest in Bangladesh's petrochemical industry.

Responding to the proposal, Egypt's Ambassador confirmed their government's interest in the matter.

Meanwhile, the Egyptian Ambassador said that two Bangladeshi investors had invested in their Alexandria Economic Zone.

He also noted that Egypt is exporting onions to Bangladesh.

The two diplomats discussed reciprocal visits by trade representatives between the two countries.

Mentioning Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's 1973 Egypt visit, the Foreign Minister said, "The brotherly relations between the two countries is historic. Many Bangladeshi students have had the opportunity to study in Egypt."

He hoped Egypt's President, Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi, would be able to participate in the upcoming D-8 conference, scheduled to be held in Dhaka.
