Adviser to the interim government on the Ministries of Industries, Housing and Public Works Adilur Rahman Khan today (14 October) directed the high officials of Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) to start work in framing a roadmap for improving the national standard of products.

"The standard of products must be ensured because it is needed for the development of industries and also improving the living standard of the people," he said while speaking at a discussion meeting organised by BSTI marking the World Standards Day.

Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Industries Zakia Sultana presided over the meeting held at Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka.

Adilur Rahman said as the BSTI is responsible for ensuring the quality of products, it will have to expand its operation across the country overcoming all obstacles.

"Making plan is not enough... you must work to reach standard goods to the people," he added.

He said the interim government has already formed several reform commissions committees, which are expected to start work from December this year or January next year.

The government is also giving more emphasis to strengthen the capacity of BSTI to formulate and implement the Bangladesh Standards of products and services, he said.

"BSTI facilitates this process by harmonizing local standards with global benchmarks, enabling Bangladesh products to meet the requirements of international buyers," he added.

Administrator of FBCCI Md Hafizur Rahman attended the meeting as special speaker while Director General of BSTI SM Ferdous Alam delivered welcome speech.

Pro-Vice Chancellor of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) Prof Dr Abdul Hasib Chowdhury presented the key notepaper.

Senior Secretary Zakia Sultana said quality of product should be maintained to protect environment and health.

BSTI DG SM Ferdous Alam said the institution's relentless pursuit of quality standards in various sector including manufacturing, agriculture, healthcare, and consumer products has enhanced the competitiveness of Bangladesh industries both locally and globally.
