A Barishal court has sent 21 people, including nine former councillors of Barishal City Corporation, to jail in three separate cases filed over an arson attack on the office of city BNP on 4 August.

Barishal Chief Judicial Magistrate Md Ashraf Uddin passed the order today (1 October), rejecting the bail petitions of the accused, court officials said.

However, the court granted bail to former councillor of Ward-15 Samjidul Kabir Babu, considering his ailing health.

Confirming the matter, plaintiff's lawyer Hafiz Ahmed Bablu 21 accused individuals appeared in court to apply for bail in connection with three separate cases involving vandalism, arson of the BNP office and attacks on its leaders and activists during the mass uprising.

After hearing arguments from both sides, the court denied bail and sent the accused to jail.

Afzalul Karim, lawyer for the accused and also vice-president of the metropolitan Awami League, stated that an appeal would be filed with the High Court against the court's decision denying the bail.

On 23 August, BNP's Barishal metropolitan convenor Moniruzzaman Khan Faruk filed a case against 381 people with Kotwali Police Station over the attack on the party office on 4 August.

Another 600-700 unidentified individuals were also made accused in the case.

Former water resources state minister Zahid Faruk and district Chhatra League President Hemayet Uddin Sumon Serniabat are currently in prison in connection with the case.
