"A member of minister's protocol team and a traffic constable sustained splinter injuries in the attack. They were treated at DMCH," DMP Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia said after visiting the spot at around 11pm.

"We will try to find out the attackers after scrutinizing CCTV footage," the DMP commissioner added.

LGRD Minister Tajul Islam told The Business Standard: "I was going to Shimanto Square from my Tejgaon office to attend a programme. A member of my protocol team got down from the car to clear the signal at Science Lab intersection. We heard a loud sound while crossing the signal. After arriving at the Shimanto Square, we came to know that a handmade bomb was thrown at that time."

After visiting the blast spot, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mohammad Javed Patwary said it was an improvised explosive device (IED).

Police's counter terrorism unit source said the bomb used in this attack is similar to those recovered recently from Khamarbari intersection near Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban. A black bag was recovered from the spot today. Police are suspecting that the bomb was kept in it.

Bomb disposal team were seen collecting evidence till filing of this report.
